August 13th was a very special day…. perhaps not for you (if you live in another city), but for those who live in New Rochelle and reside in the Beechmont area…. and especially those lovely people who belong to the Beechmont Neighborhood Association , it was truly a great day!
With assistance from Iona College and the City of New Rochelle, the Beechmont Neighborhood Association raised some $10,000 towards the project, with the President of Iona College donating a further $5000, and the City of New Rochelle an additional $5000. The cost of the project was $18,500 and the fountains were installed by the Neighborhood Association. On hand for the dedication were Victor Stanionis, President of the Beechmont Association, Mayor Bramson and Councilman Barry Fertel , Dr. Joseph Stabile of Iona College and his students; and forty-one of the Beechmont residents who reside in the area. The project Chair was Mr. Fred Wiener.
Councilman Barry Fertel stated “These fountains are an excellent example of community and City working together to make our City a better and more beautiful place for people to enjoy. Beechmont Lake is one of the jewels of New Rochelle.”
The fountains are used to help aerate, agitate and circulate the water so healthy oxygen levels are maintained during those summer months when runoff from pesticide can produce algae, etc. The fountains are lit at night by sensors and will be operating between the hours of 6 am and midnight.
The area has long been a source of pride for those who live there, and many local residents will simply visit the lake to sit and relax, or walk their dogs, or to view the wildlife that abounds.. When I was there the other day taking my photos, I noticed a cormorant which I believe is unusual for the area..I guess we can all say that everyone loves Beechmont Lake, everyone loves the Beechmont area, it isn’t just for the birds!
New Rochelle is GREAT!
