Quaker Ridge Road New Rochelle 2018

I used to have a Quaker Ridge Road address for 14 years, and my children loved living there. They love New Rochelle, and with a burgeoning family, we found ourselves moving from the 2300 square foot home to a much larger 3800 square foot home in Paine Heights! All good.

Over the years, I have watched our various areas grow, develop and emerge into thriving communities.

Quaker Ridge Road is also slated for change, and I cannot wait! Many years ago, Quaker Ridge Road was a lane..

How did it  acquire its name?  Did you know that the first house of Worship for Quakers was built on a wooded lot near Quaker Ridge Road and what is now Griffin Road. George Washington  stopped in New Rochelle to regroup his troops, and there is a historic marker on Weaver street near Cornell.

Quaker Ridge was once a narrow road, and over the years it has been transformed into a four way mini highway going nowhere! We are proud to have our annual Soap Box Derby  on Quaker Ridge in June of each year, and Quaker Ridge is also located next to Ward Acres  which accesses Paws Place – a wonderful park for our pooches, and there is also a community garden there too!  The William B. Ward Elementary School has wonderful programs at the Community Garden. However, with all of the many pluses to the area, the road itself  is hard for pedestrians and cyclists to navigate, and New Rochelle is proud to announce that it is the recipient of a $3,518,638 grant from New York State for a “Complete Streets’ improvement.  The four lane road will be transformed with sidewalks,  narrowing the road in areas to 2 lanes to make it safer, greener and great!

“This funding is critical to enhancing our infrastructure and paving the way for both pedestrian and bicycle travel,” Governor Cuomo said. “By improving roadway safety and increasing access to healthy transportation alternatives, we are providing both residents and visitors a chance to experience the state’s natural beauty like never before, while supporting a cleaner, greener New York for generations to come.”

New Rochelle was selected through a competitive solicitation process and the grant was the highest allotted for the Mid-Hudson region.

“We are thrilled to receive this grant, which will transform an aged thoroughfare into a multi-purposed roadway that can be equally enjoyed by motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians,” said Mayor Noam Bramson. “Complete Streets is a vital part of GreeNR, our sustainability plan.”

“Quaker Ridge Road is one of our main east-west corridors, connecting residents with schools, homes, parks and houses of worship. These improvements will be most welcomed and the funding will go a long way towards creating the streets of tomorrow,” said City Manager Chuck Strome.

District 5 Council member Barry Fertel said, “Thanks to the infusion of this much needed investment, Quaker Ridge Road, an important arterial road in New Rochelle’s North End, will not only be safer and more efficient but will be more accessible to pedestrians, joggers and cyclists. We’ve waited a long time, but it was worth the wait!”

There will be meetings commencing  next year, and construction will start in 2019.  WOW! a great opportunity to purchase in the area!

New Rochelle is GREAT!
