Thomas Paine – In Celebrating July 4th 2020

Who was Thomas Paine?  He was born in 1736-37 (depending upon which historic reference you utilize!), and he was a well known political activist and philosopher, most notably known for his pamphlets entitled “Common Sense  (1776) and “The American Crisis” (1776-1783 – a pro revolutionary pamphlet series). He was actually a corset maker by trade and known for being a journalist by profession.

His pamphlets were so influential at the time of the American Revolution,  and every pamphlet was reported to have been well read by the rebels. A cottage and some land was awarded to him in New Rochelle where we currently have the Thomas Paine cottage and Museum. There are colonial style fairs held each year ( but unfortunately not this year).

Wikipedia has some interesting information regarding Thomas Paine’s life..

There are some notable quotations by Thomas Paine:

“The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.”

“If there must be trouble, let it be in my day, that my child may live in peace.”

“These are the times that try men’s souls.”

“We can only reason from what is; we can reason on actualities, but not on possibilities. ”

I think all relevant in today’s world.

New Rochelle is great and Happy July 4th!
