Madam – What kind of wine would you like to with your (Canned) Sardines?

Okay – HUMOUR me (I am British here) ….. One of the most wonderful gifts/advantages of going to a diner is being able to indulge in what you want to eat, (what you should most definitely not eat, and definitely not when someone you know is in the near vicinity..

Today I had a closing… in my area– that is cause for celebration enough, but I asked my husband to go to the local diner (it was easy and I knew he would not object…) in New Rochelle on North Avenue….He ordered his Turkey dinner (very predictable but I digress), and I – being quixotic… decided to order a matzo ball soup, followed by a delicious sardine sandwich with lettuce and tomatoes (on whole wheat of course), and french fries…… and then I asked for a glass of wine… The waiter asked which kind would I like, and then I asked him ‘what would you suggest with canned sardines? I thought it was quite humorous, laughed a great deal – as did he, and I mentioned in passing that if he wanted to go and vomit before placing my order, I would understand…… I thought it was funny… he did… but perhaps – for all I knew – he did make that visit…

Then, who walks in but old friends (albeit younger than we…)… and then past next door neighbors!!!! Could this be the new meeting grounds for new clients? Should I be handing out cards (before I place my order?). Are we the new ‘old?’ Before we left, we went to sit with the friends… and I noticed that my friend’s brother had ordered a white egg omelette (whole wheat toast), followed by a side of spaghetti, and he was finishing it off my my friend’s club turkey sandwich with bacon and fries…. All of a sudden, mine didn’t look so bad!

Have a good one, and smile!
