Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s – #NEXT2015
What does a company when it has over 3.3 Billion in sales for 2014, and is THE largest affiliate of Sotheby’s International Real Estat ( not in company size BUT in actual sales)? Why, you create a NEW web-site to stay in the technology forefront, and to further enhance the easy access and availability to all listings, agents, different languages, and in short – making something perfect – into perfection!
Tuesday, May 5th (Cinco de Mayo) also was THE date in which the new site was officially launched. Over 550 agents attended the festive and informative occasion at the Stamford Hilton, where we learned about the new site, was introduced to the dynamic people who redesigned the web site (Neutrino), Mr. Paul Breunich (our President and CEO), Mr. Vin Socci (Our COO) and Mr. Paul J. Kuehner, our President of Building and Land Technology.
Did you know out web site updates all MLS information some 50 times daily (more frequently than of our competitors? The site has undergone a total redesign that ‘truly leverages our lifestyle expertise, offering users the capacity to set preferences and custom tailor the site based on their own search criteria.”

Who LIVED or is living in New Rochelle?
I originally wrote this blog post back in 2011, and I notice that as the years go by, the archives are harder to access, and so I thought I would re-post this great piece of history. There are SO many famous people living in New Rochelle or have lived in New Rochelle. Every town has those special celebrities be they from the work-force, sports, stage or screen, and New Rochelle is no exception. Here are a few of the famous people who have either lived or are living in my great city:
* Peter Lind Hayes and Mary Healy – They lived in a beautiful home on Mount Tom Road until the mid 1970s – and I had the pleasure of selling their former home in 2010 for $1.6M. Stars of both stage and screen, they lived in New Rochelle for over 40 years, and entertained the public for many more .
* Ruby Dee and the late Ossie Davis – Both were long time philanthropists, actors, and there is currently a theater named after Mr. Davis at our Public Library.
* Jay Leno – Yes the Jay Leno – but only for a few months and then his family moved away!
* Andrea McArdle – Broadway’s original “Annie” – hey – remember New Rochelle is only 45 minutes from Broadway – as the saying goes.. (closer now)
* Willie Mays – Hall of Fame baseball player
* Robert Merrill – operatic baritone – who would sing at each home Yankee game.. his home sold for $1,375,000
* Andrea Mitchell – Journalist – As you walk along the corridors of our New Rochelle High school, you can see a nice photo of Ms. Mitchell proudly displayed. Ms. Mitchell is the NBC Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent, and is also the host of MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports.” Andrea obtained her B.A. from University of Pa. and is currently married to former Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan.
* Gil Schwartz serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Communications Officer for CBS and attended our high school – going onto Brandeis University
* Louis Boccardi – He was the President and CEO of the Associated Press until his retirement in 2003 – while this list is in no real order, I am writing the names as they come to mind. Both Mr. Schwartz and Mr. Boccardi’s names are synonymous (to me) as they very kindly acted as moderators over the course of 7 years at our local “CelebriTeas” which were wonderful, intellectually stimulating events where we had famous authors (such as Charles Grodin, Richard Ben Cramer, Arthur Golden, Jill Ker Conway, Ben Yagoda, Rupert Holmes, Doris Mortman, Walter Isaacson to name a few) to raise money for our wonderful library. As a result of the hard work of the chair people and volunteers, we now have a renovated second floor with computer stations, and as of this year – new carpeting in our entranceway and large foyer which also serves as the perfect showcase for the various art shows.
* Lawrence M. Small – A long list of accomplishments from being the President and CEO of Fannie Mae, the Secretary of the Smithsonian (2000 -2007) and currently serves on the board of Marriott International and Chubb. After attending our local high school, Mr. Small went to Brown University and graduated from there in 1963 with a degree in Spanish literature.
* W.C. Fields – the name says it all!
* Leslie Gelb, former President of the Council of Foreign Relations
* Nick Gregory – is a meteorologist for Fox 5 in New York City. I can recall many years ago (approx. 22 – yikes!) that I, along with another friend, asked that he speak to our students at the local William B. Ward Elementary School. He kindly obliged, and the children greatly enjoyed seeing a celebrity and learning from him and how he reached his goals. Of course, it didn’t hurt when he said a ‘hello’ to them later that day from his TV show!
* Norman Rockwell – many people do not realize that New Rochelle was an artist’s colony per se way back in the 1930s. Norman Rockwell, and many other artists and illustrators lived in this great city. Mr. Rockwell’s former home sold for $1.6M back in 2005, and featured a gallery overlooking one of the large rooms. It was a charming home, full of meandering hallways and charm.
* Writing on art – how can I leave out Frederic Remington – famous painter, sculptor of Native American art
* I also cannot leave out Nell Brinkley -who was a famous illustrator who created the “Brinkley Girl” ( a girl who epitomized the American woman – Mae West claimed to be the first Brinkley girl ), and Ms. Brinkley lived in New Rochelle for over 20 years… I was privileged to have sold her former home in 2008 for just $1.9M!
* J.C. Penney – so many people, so many names – I didn’t want to leave out the founder of this important department store chain.
* Bob Denver – Gilligan’s Island…. New Rochelle is hardly an island, but it is a paradise to many of us – and we can see Long Island from our waterfront!
* William S. Rukeyser, Editor of Fortune Magazine
* Louis Rukeyser – business columnist, TV host and economic commentator
* M. Farooq Kathwari, Chairman of Ethan Allen
* John M. Kluge – German American television industry mogul who at one time was the richest person in America. He recently passed away in 2010.
* Jerome Kohlberg, Jr. – Billionaire co-founder of Private Equity Group KKR
* Michael Kaiser, President J.F. Kenendy Center for the Performing Arts
* Alan Menken, Composer – attended our High School and was a member of Temple Israel of New Rochelle – how can we forget “The Little Mermaid,” “Tangled,” “Sister Act,” “Aladdin,” “Pocahontas”…. and the list goes on and on.. Graduated from New York University
* Chic Young – a cartoonist and better known for his “Blondie” cartoon
- Roy S. Johnson – Famous Sports Author and Writer
* Don Hewitt – Producer and Creator of CBS 60 Minutes. Mr. Hewitt’s photo is also at the high school. He passed away in 2009.
* Dick Morris – whose lineage dates back to the first Huguenots who came to New Rochelle to escape persecution in France. Mr. Morris who was the campaign manager for President Bill Clinton amongst others, is a regular on TV and wrote in 2010 “2010 -Take Back America” which received the first Thomas Paine award in November 2010 at our local V.I.P. Club. I was present at the dinner, and he spoke quite eloquently. (I feld so badly for him amongst so many liberals!).
* Thomas Paine – I cannot leave Mr. Paine out… while not born in this great city, he was awarded a cottage as a ‘thank you’ for the role he played in the American Revolution, and was the author of “Common Sense” and “Rights of Man.”
* Courtney Green – We cannot forget Courtney who also came up through the Youth Tackle League, High chool and Rutgers University, and who is currently playing Safety for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
* Cristina Teuscher – Olympic Gold Medalist in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia in the Women’s Relay Team – Freestyle. Cristina attend our local high school, went onto Columbia and was All American, 4 time NCAA Champion, won 12 Ivy League titles amongst others, and obtained her MBA at INSEAD – a top business school. The city honored her Olympic accomplishment with a parade!
* A.J. Rosen – Three time Olympian in the sport of luge for Great Britain, coming in 16th each time – in Turin (2006, and Whistler 2010). Hey – I am his mom – I had to get him in!
I could write 5 pages of famous people who have lived or are living in this great city… perhaps it is the air, our diet (I wish) but certainly one fact is very true…
NEW ROCHELLE is a GREAT place in which to live!
I am here for all of your 2015 real estate requirements.

“A Taste of Larchmont” which basically allowed attendees to sip, taste and stroll to various Larchmont Restaurants and establishments with their friends and loved ones while the proceeds from the event benefited “My Sister’s Place“. With donated, expensive items in labeled gift baskets at each restaurant/store whereby all attendees could post their silent auction bid (s), the day was destined for success. There were over 230 tickets sold at $50 each, and the event, headed by Carolyn Fugere, President of the Larchmont Chamber of Commerce, and the Manager of Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s Larchmont office, was so enjoyable.
There was a trolley to escort attendees around to each restaurant, and oh my! The restaurants outdid themselves. The Larchmont agents (and Liz Bradley from the Rye Office who worked so very hard, along with Ali Greene, Mimi Magarelli, and everyone from our office), volunteered to be on hand at the different venues with representatives from “My Sister’s Place.”
A delicious pasta dish and wine of your choice was served at Anna Maria’s Restaurant, Amuse Bouche (a great pate featured) with wine or soft drinks at the Encore Bistro, crispy eggplant chips and more wine (oh my!) at Polpettina’s, a wonderful Biryani and chicken dish, tandoori chicken at Coriander Modern Indian Restaurant where you could have (wait for it) more wine or sup on the delicious Indian beers that compliment the spicy foods so well, a hug salad plate was served at Apiary (I heard it was wonderful), and lastly Sherwood’s Restaurant. Joe, the head bartender was on hand to ensure all went well, and what a marvelous job! He oversaw a wonderful presentation to all attendees of spicy wings, succulent ribs, and all served with – (can you guess?) wine, beer or a soft drink of your choice.
It was the perfect place in which to end a wonderful afternoon, and the gift basket on hand at Sherwoods was THE show stopper! The basket featured Yankees Tickets, 4 Guest tickets at Bonnie Briar Golf Club ,a signed Eli Manning Football, a gift certificate and 2 t-Shirts from Walter’s Hot dogs, Giants tickets (great seats too!) and all presented with a 6 pack of beer in a game-day cooler! As we all like to say “Priceless!”
Larchmont is GREAT!

A Taste of Larchmont May 2nd 3-5:30 p.m. 2015
‘Carolyn Fugere is a whirlwind of activity, intelligence and energy. Am I sugar coating it ? Hardly! Since she attained the position of Manager at the Larchmont Julia B. Fee Sotheby‘s office, she settled in to do what she does best. Namely, make a difference in all fields. Always active within the community, Carolyn became the new President of the Larchmont Chamber of Commerce. Carolyn wanted the community to know that she was there to make a difference, and not only because that is representative of the Sotheby’s name, but simply because that epitomizes her. Being the President of the Larchmont Chamber of Commerce involves organizing and creating events and topics for meetings every month, and she is also very hands on with regards to those events. One such event that she has currently poured her heart and soul into, is the “A Taste of Larchmont” benefitting “My Sister’s Place.”
What is the “A Taste of Larchmont? For just $50 a ticket, you can “sip, snack and stroll” (or pop onto the trolley provided, as you visit a variety of restaurants and partake in some of their delicious specialites or imbibe in a little aperitif. As you enter each location, there will be a gift basket and silent auction, and all proceeds will be going to “My Sisters Place“. “My Sister’s Place” is a non-profit organization serving victims of domestic violence and humant trafficking.” Sherwoods, Coriander Modern Indian, Encore Bistro, Anna Maria’s Restaurant, Polpettina, Apiary, Auray Gourmet, Post Wine & Spirits have all graciously offered their establishments for this worthy and wonderful event. The gift baskets are sounding great too, and to think that as you enjoy a few short hours with your friends and/or loved ones, just KNOW that all of the proceeds will be going to a worthy cause. Some of the silent auction items include items from the Addison Street Spa, Beauty Bar, Burn, D’s Barbershop, A Dance Studio, Diva’s, Ellen Marie Day Spa, Lusardi’s, Vintage 1891 and more!.
Tickets are available on-line, and at the Sotheby’s Larchmont office the day before and the day of the event (May 1st and May 2nd). A week of summer fun from the Creative Corner of Larchmont is one of the silent auction items , and summer is not only the only season represented! You can even place a bid on a Gingerbread house or an ‘Olde English Caroliers” display (personalized of course) for the 2015 Holidays! The Larchmont Sotheby’s agents and the Larchmont Chamber of Commerce Board Members have all worked hard together to bring forth this event. I bought my tickets. Have you? We all hope to see you on May 2nd!

Walk MS 2015 – Westchester County – Please Donate!
I used to work at Houlihan Lawrence. A wonderful company serving Westchester, and with world-wide affiliations. I now work at Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s International Realty, another wonderful company with both local and worldwide representation. Beautiful branding that is known on a world-wide basis. Both companies work tirelessly to help the community.
However, the reason for my post isn’t about a company, or where or what they represent. It is about a disease called Multiple Sclerosis, a disease that can affect anyone :
“Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million worldwide. ” (courtesy of Walk MS 2015).
April 26th, 2015 is this year’s date for its local Fundraising efforts. I think that all of us knows someone who suffers from this disease, and hopefully together, we can all come together to either donate and/or participate in this worthwhile event.
Walk MS Westchester will be at Glen Island Park. Please read all important event details to ensure that you’re prepared to have a wonderful Walk MS experience.
Date: Sunday, April 26, 2015
Start and finish location: Glen Island Park
Site Opens: 8 a.m.
Walk Begins: 9:30 a.m.
Site Closes: 12 p.m.

Paine Heights’ Colonial Fair 2015
Saturday April 11th, 2015 marked the date for a Colonial Fair in New Rochelle’s Paine Heights. There were so many interesting things to do and learn.
“Experience a Blacksmith and a Cooper, a Fiddle Player and Storyteller, a Spinner, a Schoolmarm in the One-room Schoolhouse, a Colonial Bakery with goods for sale, hands-on Weaving and Candle Dipping, Colonial Soldiers and more.
Courtesy of the Historical Society. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children”
While there, I picked up an application for the New Rochelle Historical Society. It is just $25 a year to join! I also learned some interesting facts. I was rather intrigued to ask the gentlemen dressed as soldiers why they participated.
The first gentleman traced his lineage back to the Protestants fleeing England for religious persecution, and one of his ancestors was Thomas Welles, the third Governor of Connecticut. Thomas Welles was the only man in Connecticut’s history to hold all four top offices: governor, deputy governor, treasurer, and secretary. His family name is Bulkely, and is also a direct descendant from Peter Bulkely , was an influential early Puritan minister who left England for greater religious freedom in the American colony of Massachusetts. He was a founder of Concord, “ and was named by descendant Ralph Waldo Emerson in his poem about Concord.” However, the real reason Mr. Bulkely is so personally involved in the Colonial fairs is that he loves history, and has been doing it for over 40 years!
I then asked another gentlemen why he is involved. He, too, has been taking part in the festivities for the past 40 years. He can trace his family lineage back to the Huguenots, with the family name of Tourneur. The family arrived from France and settled as farmers in Harlem in 1659. He also had ancestors coming from Scotland. I was spellbound listening to their vignettes of history.
The third gentleman was coveting an array of weaponry and sundry other items from Colonial times. He was a school teacher (retired), and has always loved history. He mentioned that he takes great delight in recounting history as it happened and not what we have learned.. He asked me if I knew the derivation of “A flash in the pan.” While a flash in the pan now means a disappointment or brief success, it actually came from the days of ” flintlock firearms, where the main charge was intended to be fired by a small charge of gunpowder in the priming pan. If the resultant fire did not pass through the touch-hole and ignite the main charge, the momentary coruscation produced noise and smoke, but no substantial effect, and was termed a “flash in the pan”. Sometimes called “fluff in the pan“, the term refers to any ineffectual, short, spasmodic effort which dies in the attempt, such as an explosion of priming in the lockpan of a gun, while the gun itself does not go off. ” (courtesy of Wiktionary). He then asked me if I knew what a ‘marked man’ meant. He stated that it came from branding a thief on his palm, and so whenever he had to appear in a court of law thereafter , and asked to raise his hand in testimony, his hand would be marked and label him as a person not to be trusted.
So much history. But that is New Rochelle. We have history, historic homes, historic neighborhoods, and it is a wonderful city in which to live. Come and visit, you will love it!
New Rochelle is GREAT!
