Veterans Day – Thank you one and all

Poppy by GayWhen I was growing up in England, I can still recall my parents buying real poppies from veterans to commemorate Veterans Day. Now, of course, we only see the  poppies  made of rayon or paper, but do our children realize what they signify?

The symbol of the poppy  came from a poem written by a Canadian,  Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae who was a physician, and who had written a poem about a fallen comrade and friend, Alex Helmer in May, 1915. He was unhappy with the poem “In Flanders Field”, and had discarded it, but it was found by fellow soldiers and was published in December of that year in  “Punch” magazine. The poem touched upon how red poppies would grow from the graves of the many fallen, and came to be symbolic of Remembrance Day.Red_Poppie_Field

“Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November to recall the end of hostilities of World War I on that date in 1918. Hostilities formally ended “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month,” in accordance with the Armistice, signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente between 5:12 and 5:20 that morning. (“At the 11th hour” refers to the passing of the 11th hour, or 11:00 am) World War I officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on 28 June 1919. (Wikipedia).

King George V  honored the Fallen by dedicating  Armistice/Remembrance Day on November 7th, 1919, and while it was initially for all of those who had died in battle in the Commonwealth countries, it is now observed in many other countries as well. In 1938, the U.S. signed into legislature as “Armistice Day, but after both World War 11 and  the Korean Wars, the word “Armistice” was changed to Veterans Day in 1954.

Thank you to all of our veterans. Thank you for representing our various countries, and protecting us. Your sacrifice is huge, and we thank you.

The leaves had yet to fall, but as I was driving by Paine Lake in New Rochelle, 10804, I could not stop myself from taking a short video of the Lake.  Named after Thomas Paine, who was awarded a small home  in thanks to his service, and is a now  the site of the Thomas Paine Cottage Museum, the area boasts beautiful older homes (and some new  ones too), many Tudors, Colonials, some Mediterranean homes, and all on tree-lined streets.

Light the Night 2013 – Rye Playland…

It was reported that they are hoping to raise a Million dollars this year at “Light the Night 2013″ , and that more people were drawn to the light  at Rye Playland than ever before…. Chris Meyers, the Chief Operating Officer of Houlihan Lawrence was the 2013 Corporate Walk Chair, and he did (as usual) an astounding job. Having lost a 15 year old brother to cancer when Chris was just 2, felt honored to be involved in the event when he was asked over a year ago. What is this charity?  LLS or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society – blood related cancers.

This past summer, Susan Glasgall, a top Westchester agent was diagnosed with Leukemia, and it brought the importance of being involved in such an event to  the forefront once again, and so Houlihan Lawrence honored Susy in the Walk.. Houlihan Lawrence raised and sponsored (as of November 2nd) over  $86,000.  There was a Houlihan Lawrence tent where delicious wraps were served by the California Pizza Kitchen, and yummy brownies and cookies too.

We all know someone who has succumbed to blood related cancers, and not enough survivors…With  our contributions,  (and support for our loved ones) will hopefully find more cures. I was saddened to learn  that Dr. Mitchell Kaphan had been diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma, and had been battling the disease for 16 months (now 28 months), and he is winning the battle. “Team Mitch”  was very evident last night, and I would like to feel that with the love and support of Mitch’s family, his ability to face all challenges with a smile, will help him in his on going fight. There were so many teams there last night… too many teams..

The event started at 5 p.m. and was organized to perfection. Live music, sponsor tents galore, teams galore…a child’s ‘zone’ too.. Rob Astorino, County Executive who was so instrumental in 2012 in allowing the event to take place at the Westchester County  Center  as Rye Playland was flooded because of “Sandy”. So many people were honored and remembered.

Lavender Sachets – for those special clients

DSC02389I am so fortunate to have a few lavender bushes in my yard  (I purchased 2 more this past summer also).. I love the fragrance of lavender, and it is nice to place in my various garment drawers so that special aroma can permeate everything…  But I have so much! SO, each year, I will pick the lavender stalks, dry the seeds, and then package them into little sachets and share with my friends and clients alike!  I just want them to know thatDSC02693

they  are special to me, and just as  seeds represent growth and life,  they are also symbolic  of  the growth of our various relationships.

Forgetting all of that, it is so much fun to make and so rewarding to give!

Trying to Eradicate the Mansion Tax – RPAC – representing Realtors & More!

As a Realtor, I get invited to many great events in the area. Some can be to show case a glorious estate, and some can be for  very worthwhile causes. Thursday evening was one such event. RPAC stands for Real Estate Politics and Advocacy and through its fund raising events and committee,  it  helps promote the election of pro-Realtor candidates who are aware and cognizant of matters that are a concern to all Realtors (and our buyers and sellers). The money is given voluntarily  (not in the form of dues), and yet is very important to every Realtor’s livelihood and profession.

30% of the  funds collected go to NAR in Washington, and go towards legislature such as:

Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae Reform,Appraisal/Mortgage Reform,Flood Insurance,Natural Disaster,Small Business Health Coverage, and also RPAC would love to have the Mansion tax eradicated also.

This all takes money, and so fund raising in addition to contributions is  a necessity. Thursday evening was one such event and was held at the Wainright House in Rye.  The evening was entitled “Sunset on the Sound” and was hosted by the Greenwich Association of Realtors, Hudson Gateway Association of Realtors, and sponsored by Irene Amato of  A.S.A.P. Mortgage. In attendance to meet and greet and answer any and all mortgage questions were Wendy Javier, Sr. Business Development Representative (914 736-9230 Ext. 109), and Johanna Gavilanes ( 914-736-9230 Ext. 100) , Underwriter from A.S.A.P.  along with Richard Haggerty, Gary Connolly, and all of the ‘big shots’ from the respective Boards!

The wines were chosen well, as were the hors-d’oeuvres – all yummy.. the seared tuna with salsa on cucumber discs were great,  as were the old (and deliciously deadly) maple glazed bacon wrapped scallops, all catered by the local Cornerstone CATERING Service.

Westchester is GREAT!
