Advait Pavuluri- Youth Stem Coding Initiative

When you give of yourself, it is selfless, and when you hear that a friend’s son has been donating his time to help others, I felt compelled to write a few words about him. There is nothing more rewarding than helping others, and a little recognition from a friend is truly okay!

My friend, Dr. Kamu Lakshmi who I met  years ago when she and her husband, Raju were searching for a home, mentioned her son Advait  to me in a conversation as we were catching up with each other. I should mention that Advait is just 17, and  enjoys coding, game design, graphic design, and video editing and production !

Advait wanted to share his love for computer technology with others, and decided to reach out to the local Boys and Girls Club. Advait is the Founder of the Youth Stem Coding Initiative . I found the story so intriguing (and inspiring) I asked Advait a few questions and here are his answers:

1)  How long have you been delving into the computer technology world and what initiated your interest in it?

My love for computers started ever since I watched Minecraft videos on YouTube in second grade. Once I saw how amazing and unique the game was, I became determined to make a video game of my own. Ever since, I’ve been obsessed with coding, video game design, and video editing, in hopes of pursuing game design/production in college.

2) What made you think to contact the Boys and Girls Club?

The Boys and Girls Club is such an integral part of the New Rochelle community; besides being an after-school program, it subsists as a home for hundreds of students across many elementary, middle, and high schools. My mother helped me get in contact with a coordinator at BGCNR, and ever since, I’ve been integrating a STEM-inspired computer science curriculum within the organization.

3) What exactly do you teach the middle school students?

I teach my students the fundamentals of coding using Scratch, a block-by-block programming language for beginner programmers. Using Scratch’s intuitive game design engine, my students have the freedom to create whatever video game they desire (as long as it’s school appropriate!). Although I have a structured curriculum, my classes feel very much “free-flowy”; once I go over our programming concepts for that day, I allow my students to spend the rest of the class time developing their very own video game. (And they ended up making really cool games, too! One of my students recreated Flappy Bird in a few months, with no prior coding experience.)

4) Is there any funding ? This is strictly a volunteer basis  ?

This club is run entirely on a volunteer basis. I prepare class lessons based on individual needs and BCGNR provided kids with chrome books and laptops—and, to be fair, that’s really all we’ve needed so far.

5) How long is the program each time you meet?  Any follow up?

The program runs for around an hour, weekly.

Short and fun homework puzzles are given to monitor to assess their progress.

As mentioned previously, I am working with the robotics club to get in contact with New Rochelle’s elementary and middle schools; we have actually presented to the NRHS principal about our robotics initiative, and he is working with us (along with the PTA) to get in contact with the middle schools’ principals. I am sure that, with time (and as this program becomes more streamlined), students will definitely be recognized for the extracurricular work they put in at BGCNR.

6)  Have you reached out to the Youth Bureau New Rochelle  as this venture is so exciting for perhaps other students in different areas where they can lend their expertise?

So far, I haven’t brought my coding initiative over to the Youth Bureau of New Rochelle. However, in the future, I would love to contact them so that they can help out with this initiative

7) Are there any special requirements for the student when they sign up for your class?

There are absolutely no special requirements required for any student joining my class. They only need their school-issued Chromebooks—no prior coding experience is needed.

8) What are your long term goals?

Well, mainly, I hope to streamline my coding initiative across multiple New Rochelle schools! The BGCNR has given me an exceptional platform to establish this program—and I want it to continue to grow it across the district. I’d also like to introduce more hands-on learning techniques into the program via robotics. In fact, I’m a part of the New Rochelle High School robotics team, and we plan to soon incorporate a new “robotics initiative” across New Rochelle’s elementary and middle schools. But, most importantly, I want this initiative to be self-sustaining! Even though I’m graduating this year, I’d love to see an increase in our schools’ computer science integration for our future generations of students. In other words, I plan for this program to continue, even after I leave for college.

It was such a pleasure meeting with Advait who I feel exemplifies what the New Rochelle school system offers by way of education and opportunity  to succeed ! New Rochelle might be a city, but when you live here, it feels like a village! We all care!

When Closing on your Home!

shallow focus photography of light bulbs

Con Ed is now automated so when you are selling your home, a little tip is to close your account the day after the closing date! Reason? If you schedule the termination of service the day of the closing, and the final buyer’s walk through is on the closing day, there is a very good chance they will find no electrical service when they arrive! This then means the attorneys must place some money into escrow until after the service is turned back on, and the electrical outlets, etc. checked!

Chili and Meatball Cook-Off to Benefit RPAC

Chili and Meatball cook-off to benefit RPAC! Wine, beer and refreshments as well as a vast array of appetizers and nibbles were on hand for all.

Well, it was a fun evening and someone had to win, and someone had to lose!  I lost! Ha! imade chili and decided at the last minute (don’t ask me why) to make it Southern style and shredded the Angus beef. So, it didn’t appear the way you usually see chili.

Contestants brought either the meatballs or the chili, and there were 4 brave judges to taste everything!

Danny Hemchand from HomeTeam Inspection Service ( https://www.hometeam.com  914 344-5413) ) won the Chili contest, and Raymon d LaFlamme from U.S. Bank, 79 E. Putnam Avenue, Greenwich, Ct. (203 258-4615 – raymond.laflamme@usbank.com) won the meatball contest!

There is always next year!

Greg Herb, NAR REALTOR Party Community Outreach Liaison was the special guest and speaker, and he mentioned that $800,000 had been raised thus far this year with approximately $200,000 having been raised by HGAR! As an example a to where the money goes, the 1031 Exchange was going to be eliminated but thanks to the lobbying of RPAC, it is still available.

the REALTORS® Political Action Committee(link is external) (RPAC) has promoted the election of pro-REALTOR® candidates across the United States. The purpose of RPAC is clear: voluntary contributions made by REALTORS® are used to help elect candidates who understand and support their interests. These are not members’ dues; this is money given freely by REALTORS® in recognition of the importance of the political process. The REALTORS® Political Action Committee and other political fundraising are the keys to protecting and promoting the real estate industry.

Brown Baby Girl Appears in New Rochelle!

Some friends and I attended the last PIFEST (Philanthropy through Music) concert of the summer season on Saturday at Adina’s home on Hamilton Avenue in New Rochelle. It was fantastic!!!

Brown Baby Girl was the performer and the audience simply loved her! Sponsored by “Den of Thieves Whiskey, Pat’s Exotic Beverages and Alvin and Friends”. PIFEST received a Community Award from the Ruth and Harold Chenven Foundation and the event was packed at this event.

( The Ruth and Harold Chenven Foundation is a small foundation that gives unrestricted grants to individual artists. Its mission is to support the work of artists living and working in the United States and to foster a greater public appreciation for the arts. Grantees are selected by a panel of jurors consisting of artists and art professionals. In 2022, the Foundation will celebrate its 40th year of grant-making. Each year, all funding raised is used in the support of the mission. In their history of giving, the foundation has provided support to more than 200 artists).

Could sports be the best hope for teenage girls’ mental health in the social media age?

From anxiety, to eating disorders, to depression, we are living in a period where young people’s mental health is the worst in recorded history.
As these types of illnesses are rising, so too is the amount of time young people are spending online and on social media. But within these trends is another one: girls seem to be suffering in larger numbers than boys.

The rate of depression for those who spend five hours
or more online is 15% for young males. But for girls it’s more than double that, at 38%.
(And although suicide rates of boys are 3 times higher than that of girls, the gap between the two sexes is narrowing globally).

In an age where young people are growing up surrounded by social media, beauty trends and
increased online interaction, it’s little wonder the younger generation are both influenced and affected by what they see on their phones.

Beauty has appeared in different forms throughout the ages and has historically put pressure on women leading to low self esteem and body confidence. According to statistics from the USA national survey: Drug & Health use
girls from Generation Z are 3 times more unhappy than the previous generation. The pressure to reach this beauty ideal has reached its highest level with social media and online
marketing delivering a brutal message, especially for young girls.
’You must be flawless, always, to be beautiful and if not, you are nothing until you fix yourself.’

According to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, almost 229,000 cosmetic procedures were performed on patients between the ages of
13 and19 in 2020. A survey by The Girls’ Attitudes revealed that 69%
of adolescent girls think they are not beautiful enough. Looking at all these statistics, we see the issue of low self-esteem is the biggest problem for adolescent girls.

How can we cut girls screen time to keep them healthy physically and emotionally?

Undoubtedly, sports and physical activity are very
important for the mental health of all ages, specifically
young adolescents. According to the Monitoring of Future 8th
Grade survey from 2009 to 2015, the depression rate is highest amongst adolescents who
spent time the most time online. While the lowest
depression levels are in adolescents who engage in regular sports and exercise.
Sports and physical activity not only play a critical role in preventing depression but are also very important to developing adolescent girls’ self-esteem.

The University of Georgia Psychology Department conducted a study into early sports participation and self-esteem in girls. All 220 female university students studied who play sports and were involve in early sports participation had higher self-esteem compared to people who don’t.

In 2018 the Women in Sports Foundation Teen Sports Report found that 40%
of teenage girls are not participating in any sporting activities. It has been
demonstrated that spending too much time online is negatively affecting the well-being of girls. Generation Z are digital natives, and this is unique. Their
reasoning, communication and socializing are vastly
different to every previous generation.

It would be an unrealistic problem-solving approach to ban social media or beauty filters as some USA Senators have suggested in Congress. However, if governments correctly implement early sports participation strategies and promote physical activity well and parents encourage their girls in sports especially adolescence times, we will see a substantial drop in the average screen time usage statistics. Probably by more than half the current time which would provide a huge benefit to their mental health.

When we consider all data, and the situation
Generations Z and Alpha are facing it is heart breaking. Finally, raising healthy girls is crucial for the development of society. We must help them by using
sports to stay healthy physically and emotionally for the future of our world.

Vacating (Emptying) you Home!

I always loved the of George Carlin line ” people move because of their stuff. Too much stuff. A house is a place for their stuff” . However, when we all move, we do need to either sell our stuff, donate our stuff, store our stuff or discard our stuff!

As a Realtor, many times we are required to assist our clients who may live out of town, are ill, or are simply overwhelmed by the process. One recent client lives out of the country and the friends who were going to take furniture didn’t materialize and so we found ourselves looking to first sell and then donate the furniture a week before closing! A great site is Facebook! Since I live in Westchester, you can just search for Westchester County Sales, and a whole stream of sites will materialize. You can just post on one site and then have the great option to share that item for sale onto 5 plus more sites!

I was so fortunate last week as from the 70 plus responses I received for a free dining room set, and when one young man mentioned he was going to be fostering children. I reached out him, and not only did he pick up the dining room set, but also took unwanted paint cans, a Television, and a dehumidifier! So great! You have to be patient as I tried to respond to each person as they made their inquiry and you will come across questions like “do you deliver” , “are their any knicks on the table top (this all being free), ‘ and can you measure the chairs? Out of necessity, I had to just move on to the next person. The young man who picked up everything was lovely and even sent a photo of the dining room set all nicely placed in his dining room!

I always like to use Ron’s trucking for unwanted items if they need to be picked up and the town will not do so such as paint cans, etc. He is always responsive and his workers are always so helpful. Obviously, if you know beforehand that the paint cans will not be needed, just dry out the paint in the can by using kitty litter and then the town will pick up same.

I love GoGreendrop.com . You can choose from 5 non profit charity groups, and select where you you would like to donate your unwanted items. Perfect!

Estate Sales. I noticed last week a company in my area called Blue Moon Estate Sales . Their signage was professional looking and not handwritten tacky signs on cardboard.

My friend James Welker greatly recommends the following companies:

Greencastle Estate Sales “Great owner” Best for artsy-funky world traveler homes”.

Elizabeth Jackson Estate Sales & Consign It Greenwich . “Very professional owner. Best for high-end homes. Can work with very picky homeowners!”

Frans Tag Sales Ltd./ Appraisal Services, Larchmont , N.Y. “Easy Going owner. Best with older antique homes. Also great with ‘lived-in for 50 years’ homes.”

Consign it on Main – New Rochelle . “Downtown New Rochelle. Owners know furniture/design and give fair appraisals. Also great resource to purchase furniture and get design help for new home/apartments”.

Yard sales can be fun but be prepared to basically give your treasures away for nothing. People love to barter and I can always recall a good friend telling me that when he had a yard sale, he told people on the second day his price was “a dollar and smile!”.

A home must be broom swept clean at the time of closing, and as an aside the home should reflect the same condition as it was at the inspection.

It’s always my pleasure to assist my clients. Call me!
