Comedy Night in Mamaroneck!

Always fun especially when you are friends and associates! Julia B. Fee was one of the sponsors for this charity event benefitting the Mamaroneck Continuing Education Program.

It was held for the second year in a tow at Decadent Ales in Mamaroneck where there is always a huge array from craft ales and ciders to choose from, and of course other spirits too! I was joined by my good friend and Publisher of Pelham Living Magazine, Bonnie Dougan

Seen above top row left to right: Ron Nobles (Emcee) , Martha Sundin, Kristin Dietz, Middle Row: Doyle Brand , Tad Flynn, , Bottom Row: Rich Happel and Talia Reese

There were snacks throughout the evening (pretzels, chicken tenders, chicken tenders and hamburger sliders). Most importantly, it was just a fun night and we all need to enjoy ourselves with friends! This is what happens when you live in the Mamaroneck area. Fun events, nice people and so close to the city!

Pelham Living – The Inaugural Publication!

I have known Bonnie Dougan for the past 18 years or so, and have known her to be an intelligent, caring person, one who cared for the disadvantaged as a Senior Supervisor at the Young Adult Institute in Tarrytown. Her professionalism, dedication were renowned and touted by all. After 30 years of her unbridled success, Bonnie decided to take a new career path, and became the Publisher of “Pelham Living“. “Pelham Living” is the first magazine to be published in Pelham for many years, and Bonnie has been receiving so many accolades in this new and much needed venture.

I recently sat down with her and asked her a few questions regarding this great new publication. I think you will enjoy hearing more about this new magazine!

“The magazine will be delivered unwrapped to approximately 2,906 homes in Pelham (village and Manor) via mail each month.  It is a beautiful glossy magazine full of colorful ads and interesting content.  We spotlight a local family/individual on each cover with a feature story inside.

It will feature various family-friendly content from the neighborhood, and nonprofit calendars of events to educational and informative articles from our professional experts and resident (spotlighting their strengths, and involvement in the community).

The magazine is for the people of Pelham by the people of Pelham, so we encourage participation, ideas, and involvement as much as possible.  The sponsors are the small and large businesses in Pelham and the surrounding areas.

Question: How are you reaching out to the residents and businesses? “My biggest challenge so far was sometimes getting in front of business owners as they are often busy, as you would imagine, and time is short.”

Question: I understand you are a Member of the local Chamber of Commerce in Pelham . So you are actively involved in the community also? Has this helped you in your new venture? “Forming wonderful connections with members of the Chamber, other organizations, business owners, and the residents has been a great experience.  Pelham is a wonderful community and I have had pleasant interactions with everyone I met.  I am a board member of the Chamber; I am the fundraising chair and can not say enough nice things about the great and necessary work that this organization is doing to support businesses and the community.  I am honored to be a part of it and to have an input in making it even stronger. I enjoy being involved in community events and learning more about what I can do to facilitate growth, I have a lot of fundraising experience and enjoy supporting important causes.”

Bonnie can be reached at bdougan@bestversionmedia.com or phone:  at 914 648-6573. She welcomes sponsors from all of the surrounding areas including Pelham (of course), New Rochelle, Scarsdale, Mamaroneck, Rye and Larchmont!

Question: I mentioned your past work experience. Please mention a little more?  “Prior to building this publication through Best Version Media (the parent company), I was a Senior Supervisor for Young Adult Institute for many years. I ran a day program for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, developed community volunteer training programs to provide opportunities for individuals to live, work, and learn valuable skills, and did fundraising for the YAI Tarrytown program.

Question: So your past work experiences has helped facilitate this new career path? “My former work and experiences have certainly helped me to feel more comfortable talking/ meeting with business owners and residents.  I am used to listening to concerns and working with individuals and groups to come up with goals and solutions for those concerns/obstacles.  I sort of use the same approach to help businesses solve issues of getting in front of or getting more customers into their establishment through sponsorship and multi-touch branding approaches; we offer print and digital champagnes.  “

I think we can all congratulate Bonnie on this inaugural May issue, and we look forward to the continued success of this publication!

2023 15th Annual Columbia China Summit

While I was not privileged to attend the entire summit, I was invited by my good friend, Kan Luo, who organized a panel discussion on Day 2 of the summit to listen into an interesting discussion on Global Macro Economy. The panelists were Henry Mo (Chief Economist & Head of Market Strategy at Corebridge Financial, Maggie Meijun Wang ( Managing Director & Global Head of Structured Products Strategy, Citi), Grant Zibing Gao (Managing Director, EJF Capital & CEO EJF China), Haibu Huang ( Managing Director, Global Head of Credit Stress and Portfolio Analytics, Morgan Stanley) and the Moderator was Jing Liu (Managing Director, Jstar Capital Vice Chair, Renmin University North America Alumni Association).

The discussion was quite informative and ended too soon but the takeaways I garnered were the following:

Kan and Wayne Wayne and me!

Ms. Wang had just returned from an overseas trip to London and Paris and the Europeans still prefer to invest in the United States as opposed to elsewhere. While the Silicon Valley Bank collapsed, with over 4900 Banks in the United States, the major investments with the larger banks are long term, and so they can ‘kick this all down the line’ meaning nothing is affected right now. Smaller banks issue the real estate mortgages and short term loans whereas the larger banks invest in long term investments so no concerns. In the U.S. the government cannot intervene until a bank declares bankruptcy. However, in China, if the government sees a bank failing, they can step in. It was also notes that corporate commercial real estate is stronger now than the consumer real estate market. (I would still argue though that all real estate is local!).

It was noted by the panel that the issue of Taiwan is not a democratic issue but rather an issue of sovereignty and territory. Taiwan does not wish to be a part of mainland China is common knowledge. However, China is trying to attract the younger Taiwanese population to the mainland but it is harder to travel there.

It was noted that there are border disputes between India and China and that China is close friends with Pakistan.

Another small point was on Tik Tok. There has been so much discussion here on the subject and how there are certain Chinese companies that have access to everyone’s profiles. However, what we do not realize is there is an Espionage law in China which basically translates to that whatever you do in China, China has access to. Therefore, what we may see as being infringing on our rights, it is in fact a cultural difference.

It was a very interesting afternoon, and I greatly enjoyed being there! On another note, the new business building is called the David Geffen Building and is a beautiful modern structure. One of the sponsors was OLEADA (a beautiful line of handbags – Our name “OLEADA” is derived from the Spanish word for “ocean waves”. Deeply embedded in our identity, the ocean has given us numerous inspirations with a special place in our hearts. As a brand committed to sustainability, we are dedicated to doing our part to save the ocean from human pollution.) The Co-founders of this company are Tiffany and Tracy and Maye Musk has designed a limited collection.

Overall, it was notes that there is confidence in the economy!

K-Dramas – Oh my!

Prior to Covid, I would take out 3 books each week from the library and I simply loved to read at night/every night. With Covid, I found my self being drawn to Netflix/HBO/Showtime, etc. and started binge-watching all of the shows/movies/series.

courtesy of Fabio Lange

After catching up on all of the shows everyone had been discussing for years (“Breaking Bad”, “Barry”, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”, “Homeland” “Ray Donovan” etc), I then found myself looking at the shows and series with sub titles. I absolutely loved ‘Silver Spoon” (a Russian show about a wealthy young man whose Oligarch father sends him to the police department to work as a policemen hoping he would mature. He obviously turns out to be a great policeman!). I saw a few years back a Polish series, Swedish shows, Indian, French and German. I loved “Fauda” . One reason I also like the Foreign movies/series is because you get to see how others live/cultures/customs/what they eat around the world. How can you not like that? One regret is my not having gone to Korea for the 2018 Winter Olympics. My son, A.J. was representing Great Britain in luge, and we knew that his equipment was not what it should have been, and so we didn’t go. That and the expense. However, as a mom, we always find a way to see our children! I knew he would not be shown on American television and so I purchased a VPN account which then allowed me to access Sky Sports in England . Through Sky Sports, that then allowed me to watch the races live. The funny thing was my younger son was living in Australia at the time, and he traveled to the Olympics from Australia with his girlfriend, Shannon, and I was able to catch them both on video as they were cheering on A.J. in his races! How much fun is that! My sons told me how great the country is, the food was great so it was definitely my loss! I was never a fan of Kimchi but in seeing in all of the shows will definitely make me try again! On another (proud mom) note, A.J.’s photo at the South Korean Olympics was selected as the new Samsung phone launch ad!

Courtesy of Markus Winkler

I am not attracted to the science fiction shows. Game of Thrones never appealed and I can easily skip over so many of the shows now streaming. Call me old fashioned but I like funny, romantic and dramatic ( hopefully intelligent ) shows or shows that are simply fluff. No politics, just enjoyable. Any politics. Click.

So now fast forward to the K-Dramas. I first saw “Crash Falling On You” and loved it. It is about a young, spoiled rich lady who takes a paraglider out, and crashes down into North Korea after a tornado. (Okay far fetched I know but adorable!). Of course, she is found by a simply gorgeous soldier and a love story ensues mixed with drama, humor and romantic music. I cried my eyes out! Ha! From there, I went to “My Holo Love” and absolutely loved “The Good Detective” (I was so sad to hear it was not picked up for a third season as it was great!).

Anyway, my point is – if you are seeking something different other than Science Fiction, Marvel Comic movies then try the K-dramas! They are great!

Real Estate? I am always thrilled to have so many clients from around the world. After seeing one show, I reached out to a Korean friend (past client) and we were chatting about it! However, I do work seven days a week in real estate and am always available but it is also important to unwind at night! Cheers!
