National Pineapple Day June 27th!

Did you know that National Pineapple Day was on June 27th? What is National Pineapple Day?

The image of the pineapple has long adorned the welcoming entrances of some of the world’s finest homes. The exotic fruit’s association with fine living dates back to the fifteenth century, when European explorers brought them back from their voyages to the Caribbean. By the seventeenth century, when this rare and highly prized fruit began to be cultivated in hothouses, only the very wealthy could afford them and would sometimes use them as the centerpiece for their lavish entertaining tables. Pineapples became so synonymous with opulence that some were even known to rent them for their table displays.

So, when I was asked to represent the owners of 154 Broadview Avenue, and first saw the front door, I knew it was destined to be a Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s listing!

Beechmont Lake New Rochelle

If you live locally then you are aware of the great change of Beechmont Lake. The Beechmont Lake Improvement Project was started in 2019 with the same year completion date.

Estimated completion: 2019
Total Funding: $1,850,000
Funding Source: PayGo, Bonds, State Grant
Last Updated: 2/23/2018

Construction Details (Courtesy of the City of New Rochelle)

The Beechmont Lake capital improvement construction Phase 1 will begin in August 2019 and continue as conditions permit until the end of the year. The project goal is to restore the lake’s health and beauty and ensure it will be enjoyed by our community in years to come.

Contractors will start by removing dead and diseased trees, grading the lake perimeter, and then dredging. While dredging and grading are underway, the lake and its surroundings will become a worksite. In spring 2020, Phase 2 of the project is planned to begin with residual dredging and site work if needed and conclude with the addition of new amenities including a third fountain, benches, a nature trail and enhanced landscaping.

All we can say is that it looks great!

New Rochelle High School Graduation 2022

Always so impressive to se the amount of graduates we have from our local High School each year. The School District only started doing this last year because of Covid, and its just a nice way to congratulate the students!

Here is wishing them every success in their new ventures be it college, the military or otherwise.

Remember, there will always be struggles in life but as Sir Winston Churchill once wrote “Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm. “

Congratulations to you all!

SVH Design Interiors

My company SVH Design Interiors was recently approached by a client with a problem to
solve. They were a young family with a second child on the way and had bought a beautiful
1909 house in New Rochelle with very little closet space. The existing closets were dark and
basic and nonfunctional and the interiors of some of them had been used to install central air
ductwork, which rendered a few of them unusable. I presented them with different options at
various price points. Some were going to be simply retrofitted to gain more usable space and
the others were going to be custom built into the rooms. The additional issue was that since it
was during the pandemic there were some serious supply change issues, and they did not have
a long timeline.

For two of the bedrooms, I gutted the shelving and removed the existing clothes rails,
installed lighting, and redesigned the layout of the interior space to be more functional.
The large landing area halfway up the stairway begged for a built-in widow seat with storage
for bulky items, and to become an additional seating area perfect for bedtime stories.
The new nursery was a large space that was temporarily being used to store most of their
clothing on free standing racks. It was decided that we should custom build closets partially
along one wall. The guest room had an existing closet that was too shallow to properly hang
clothing, so I chose to demolish the small existing closet and custom build recessed closets
along the same wall.

For these two rooms it was important that the closets remain authentic to the style of the
house. They needed to have double hanging space, shelving for shoes as well as interior
drawers for maximum use of space, without overpowering the rooms and remain authentic to
the style of the house.

Lastly, the front entryway had a large radiator cover to the left serving as a shelf. The small
existing coat closet was completely unusable due to the ductwork inside, so there was nowhere
to hang coats or store shoes. For this area I walled over the existing closet and designed a
custom floor to ceiling, wall to wall closet with the help of California Closets. Here we chose a
modern grey grained wood for dramatic effect as it would be a focal point from the main living
area.

My clients were very happy with the results and now have storage space to spare!

Lunch & Learn Honoring Janet DeMasi

Janet DeMasi is an indomitable force. We all know that and love her. It was so lovely to have Janet honored at the inaugural Friends of The Center Lunch ‘n Learn at Lusardi’s Restaurant in Larchmont. I was so impressed with Leslie Blank, a longtime favorite teacher and how she broke down as short story as written by Grace Paley called “Wants”. 1974.

It was a lovely afternoon. Cheers to Janet!

Please join us for the inaugural
Friends of The Center Lunch ’n Learn
in honor of Janet Demasi – a longtime friend of
The Center for Continuing Education
When:  Thursday, May 19 from 12:15 – 2:00 PM
Where:  Lusardi’s at 1885 Palmer Avenue, Larchmont

What:   Learn about the Art of the Short Short Story from one of our most beloved teachers,
Leslie Blank, while enjoying a delicious three course meal
“For sale: Baby shoes, never worn.”  —  attributed to Ernest HemingwayEdgar Allan Poe, father of the American short story, asserted that a “tale” should be unified in plot, character, setting, and, most importantly, effect.  In order to achieve the emotional effect, the story should be read in one sitting of “a half-hour to one or two hours.”  What if that effect could be achieved in a matter of a just few minutes’ reading? Then you would have the short short story.  In our Lunch and Learn lesson, we’ll discuss the elements of the short short story and the art that goes into “conveying deep truths and universal human emotions” in just a few short paragraphs—or less.

Cost:  $68 includes lunch, learning, and lively in-person conversation
