Hounds on the Sound 2012

I am sure you are all tugging at the leash for this event or rather your pooches are, but Sunday, October 2nd from 10-3 p.m. marks the third annual Hounds on the Sound Dog Walk and Festival at Glen Island Park in New Rochelle.

The Humane Society of New Rochelle and Pet Rescue have teamed up yet again, and it promises to be an exciting day of K-9 demonstrations, music, food, competition, vendors, a leisurely 1.5 walk with your pooches – and raising necessary funds for these two wonderful organizations while doing so. Lou Young of CBS News will be cutting the ribbon, and look for the Pet Rescue Booth where you will be able to purchase raffle tickets for the October 30th Giants vs. Miami Dolphins Game. 2 tickets to that game have been generously donated – and wait for it, they come with premium parking!

Sponsored walkers who obtain $100 or more will receive a “Hounds on the Sound T-Shirt,” and people who donate $100 or more will also receive a complimentary T-Shirt, and acknowledgement on the website and newsletter. People who donate more than $250 will receive not only that but also a trail marker sign with either your name or company’s name along the trail.

All donations are tax deductible. Any lat minute questions or inquiries, please email the organizations at Walk@ny-petrescue.org

It is the goal to save as many lives as possible for these wonderful animals (cats as well as dogs), so please join them on Sunday. Last year 1000 people attended with 400 dogs… I give that a 3 woofs, and promises to be another howling good time…

Woodbury Common – $400,000 in ONE Day!

I was quite remiss yesterday (not!), and actually took a day off going to Woodbury Common in Central Valley, New York (about 45 minutes by car from New Rochelle). For those who are not familiar with this particular Premium Outlet Shopping Center, it boasts (right now) approximately 220 outlet stores, from the really high end designers to the lesser brands. I am always amazed at the turnover in shops. I was disappointed to see that the Pottery Barn and Williams Sonoma are no more, but there always seems to be another store wishing to enter the fray.

It used to be that if you didn’t arrive there by a certain time, parking was nigh impossible, but on a Labor Day weekend, my husband and I arrived there at around 8:50 am.. and the shops opened at 9 am. Perfect! We did not witness any crowds until we were leaving around 1 p.m. and even then there was plenty of walking ‘space’ between the stores. I was told at Brooks Brothers that the stores were ‘mobbed’ on the Friday..

I found myself in “Off 5th” never one of my most favorite stores, but I thought I would ‘check it out” Ha!. Alas, I was probably a day late and all that, but they had marvelous haute couture fashions but either too small or too large for me.. but it was fun looking. My husband, trying to occupy his time, found himself at the cash register, and engaged into a conversation with the manager. He was informed that as of 11 a.m. yesterday, they had taken in around $100,000 of sales, and expected to take in around $400,000 by day’s end! I was amazed at the amount.

That is an awful lot of merchandise being sold, especially when you consider the prices don’t seem to top $1000 or so..I was thinking that shopping had declined due to the economy, and it probably has based on what they used to sell, but obviously there are still buyers out there- arriving later in the day perhaps, but still buying in great numbers.

There are usually a large amount of Europeans there (special bus tours from the city), but yesterday I only heard a smattering of (British) English, Italian and a few Russian voices. There was a large amount of Asian shoppers, and I counted no less than 30 shopping bags from the Coach store with one group alone while they were waiting for their transportation (and I was waiting for my hubby after his bathroom visit…). There is definitely money to be spent, and I always like to see a shopping Center doing well. My husband and I thought that the fewer Europeans perhaps were an indication of what is happening in Europe. Who knows..but interesting. I thought it quite reflected today’s economy.. sans the lack of Russians but if you are an Oligarch you wouldn’t need a discount shopping center!

It was a great day off, (and of course I saved so much money) and I hope that the same trend will continue this fall in home sales for us all!

What Does $1.9 Million Buy in Larchmont 10538?

Larchmont, 10538 is very desirable and is considered one of the most expensive towns in which to reside in the United States, and many times you have to act quickly before you lose that buying opportunity! I recently represented buyers searching for a waterfront home (this particular home is located in a secluded cove with weeping willows galore, the occasional swan, and beautiful views from most of the windows. Built in the 80’s, offering 5 bedrooms, and close to the village, trains, and just 30 minutes from New York City.. it sold for $1.9 Millions Dollars in July, 2012. After we we were in contract, an associate informed me that her buyers were on their way in from California to purchase the house and we had beaten them to it.. so we really lucked out! It also appraised for $1.95 so even better for my buyers.

What do you get for $1.3 Million in Larchmont 10538?

Larchmont 10538 is a very desirable area.. especially if you live within walking distance to the village and trains (and restaurants)…

4 Hillside Road, Larchmont 10538    356x257xar13460922605189_jpg_pagespeed_ic_pZ9GlG1HWv

Just a few minutes to Larchmont Village, and just 35 minutes by train to New York City, it was no wonder that the owners of this 5 bedroom home . listed at $1,299,000, received several bids the very first weekend, and sold for $1.3 Million Dollars in July, 2012. A previous owner loved boating, and renovated the kitchen like a galley with a Corrian counter shaped like a surf board with striped cherry and walnut flooring … quite unique!

The Ward Acres Community Garden 10804

Don’t have a garden? Want to plant some flowers or vegetables? Want to plant some organic vegetables and help feed the hungry? Then look no further than the Ward Acres Community Garden, New Rochelle 10804. Open from approximately February 15th to November 1st, and first established in 2009, with 88 separate 10×10 plots, it was created by volunteers with the support of the New Rochelle Department of Parks and Recreation, and New Rochelle residents can rent plots for a small yearly fee each season. Six of the plots are utilized for the H.O.P.E. Community Services Soup Kitchen, shared plots are also available. Some of the plots are used as teaching tools by the Ward Elementary School (great idea!) for grades K-5.

Plot renters are asked to cultivate and maintain their plots during the season, in addition to donating 12 hours of service to the Community Garden. It has been a great success, and the volunteers have worked extremely hard to raise much needed funds for the seasonal water installation. One of the goals, is to grow the vegetables utilizing organic gardening principles, and from walking past the garden, you can readily see tomatoes, flowers, sunflowers, and so many vegetables blooming! Another goal is to share ideas and tips with fellow gardeners, and to harvest some vegetables to help feed the hungry of New Rochelle. The Community Garden is located off Broadfield Road opposite the Ward Elementary School.
